
Mr Enis Guryel
Mr Enis Guryel is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon working at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust in the Major Trauma Centre since 2011.
His specialist interest is in the management of acute complex trauma in both the upper and lower limbs in adults and paediatrics. Enis’ sub-specialty interests are the management of bone infection, non-union, deformity correction and limb lengthening and works with plastic surgeons performing combined operating lists and MDT clinics.
He qualified from Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals Medical School in 1998 and gained his membership to the RCSEngland in 2004.
He completed the St. George’s Hospital South West Thames Orthopaedic rotation and undertook the Complex Trauma and Limb Reconstruction Fellowship at St. Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey.
Enis enjoys teaching at local, regional and national courses and is Past-president of the Federation of Orthopaedic Trainees in Europe and is a reviewer for the Bone & Joint Journal.
Enis is the past president for the Orthopaedic section of the RSM and a member of the BOA.
Clinical Interests
Specialising in trauma and limb reconstruction, with over 15 years of experience, Mr Guryel’s expertise encompasses a wide range of procedures. His areas of focus include:

Fracture management - upper and lower limb fractures, including periarticular fractures of the lower limb and foot

Orthoplastic reconstruction - joint cases with plastic surgery to address combined bone and skin problems

Deformity correction - techniques such as acute correction and internal fixation, as well as gradual correction using the Taylor spatial frame

Non-union management - cases where fractures fail to heal properly

Limb-length discrepancy - solutions for patients requiring lengthening procedures

Bone infection management - both fracture-related and haematogenous infections

Segmental bone loss - utilising advanced methods such as masquelet, motorised transport nails and external fixator-assisted bone transport
Mr Guryel, along with his colleague Mr Robertson, leads the limb reconstruction MDT at University Hospitals Sussex and regularly attends regional and national limb reconstruction meetings, ensuring all complex cases are discussed openly to ensure the optimum treatment for each patient.
Mr Guryel is currently Clinical Director for orthopaedics at the University Hospitals Sussex Major Trauma Centre.
Research and Education
Mr Guryel is actively involved in the education of new surgeons. Locally, he regularly organises regional teaching on trauma and limb reconstruction for trainees. Internationally, he is an invited educator on a number of international courses on topics including the use of lengthening nails and bone transport nails for complex bone fractures or infections. He has pioneered the use of new techniques and contributed his experience to the wider limb reconstruction community both nationally and internationally.
